New York State Police say they arrested John Kosinski of Union Vale on Wednesday, July 24. According to police, Kosinski was traveling northbound on Chestnut Ridge Road in the town of Union Vale and struck a pony-drawn carriage carrying Mary Jean Calvi, 61, of Union Vale on Saturday, May 11.

Police say Calvi, who works with the town's Animal Control Office, sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover. The pony, police say, had to be euthanized.

Further investigation and laboratory testing analysis led to the development of probable cause to arrest Kosinski. He was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, a class E felony, and driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol, an unclassified misdemeanor.

Kosinski was ticketed and is scheduled to appear in Union Vale Court on Wednesday, August 7.
